One Ton Cup 2002 - One Ton Cup - Here we go for the 2002 edition !
ST. TROPEZ-(22-8-2002) From 7 till 12 October, the 2002 ONE TON CUP start signal will be given in the Saint-Tropez mythical bay for the IC45 World Championships.

Once again, the oldest French yachting trophy and its legendary 10kg solid silver cup will make the world team racing specialists dream.

Amongst the participants who already registered, Georges Andreadis with ATALANTI X, will be there to defend his title. This former Greek banker of 60, has approximately 50 years of experience in sailing and racing. Experience…

But he will have some hard work to do, as the 2 K CHALLENGE training boats –ONE and TWO- training towards the 2006 America’s Cup, will also be part of the game, and they are decided to get a victory. Don’t forget they already know the sailing area as they trained over there in June when the boats were christened. Talent and youth…

The American Dawn Riley will be at helm on K CHALLENGE ONE, with Alain Fedensieu for tactics.

On K CHALLENGE TWO, Nicolas Charbonnier, European 470 Champion, will be the skipper for this boat, with Laurent Pages taking care of the tactics, (Laurent finished at the second place in “le Tour de France à la Voile” in July).

CAVALE BLEUE will also take the start; Michel Duquenne’s IC45 will have Thierry Peponnet at helm, who is also targeting the podium. Thierry is also part of the K Challenge’s team, and will leave no chance to his friends.

WOLF, Glynn Williams’ boat (from England) will be with the others at the starting line, and will take advantage from its training in the “Voiles de Saint-Tropez” regatta which is taking part to the week before.

So we can expect some very nice regattas, with competitors who are all very motivated to win : the 2002 edition is very promising and will be very intense…

The One Ton Cup is an international competition run under the ISAF rules (International Sailing Federation). The layout is a winward-leeward circuit, one of the most technical.

Created in 1899 by le Cercle de la Voile de Paris, the One Ton Cup is used to reward the winner of the first real time regatta for `one ton` boats and consecrates the IC45 World Champion since 1999.

Amongst the legendary skippers who lifted the  famous cup’s 10kg solid silver : William K. Vanderbilt, Ted Turner, Willy Illbruck, and more recently Paul Cayard and Russell Coutts.
